European Pharmacopoeia, 6th ed. (Almagate). A white or almost white, fine crystalline powder. It contains 15.0 to 17.0% aluminium calculated as aluminium oxide, 36.0 to 40.0% magnesium calculated as magnesium oxide, and 12.5 to 14.5% carbonic acid calculated as carbon dioxide. Practically insoluble in water, in alcohol, and in dichloromethane. It dissolves with effervescence and heating in dilute mineral acids. The filtrate of a 4% suspension in water has a pH of 9.1 to 9.7. Store in airtight containers.

Almasilate is an artificial form of aluminium magnesium silicate hydrate. It is an antacid that is given orally in doses of up to about 1 g.
A hydrated native aluminium magnesium silicate is used as a suspending, thickening, and stabilising agent in pharmaceutical preparations. Attapulgite is another native form.

BP2008 (Hydrotalcite). A hydrated form of an aluminium magnesium basic carbonate corresponding to the formula Al2Mg6(OH)16CO3,4H2O. It contains not less than 15.3% and not more than 18.7% of Al2O3 and not less than 36.0% and not more than 44.0% of MgO. The ratio of Al2O3 to MgO is not less than 0.40 and not more than 0.45. A white or almost white, free-flowing, granular powder. Practically insoluble in water it dissolves in dilute mineral acids with slight effervescence. A 4% suspension in water has apH of 8.0 to 10.0.

It contains the equivalent of 90 to 105% of Al5Mg10(OH)31(SO4)2, calculated with reference to the dried substance. A white or almost white crystalline powder. Practically insoluble in water and in alcohol soluble in dilute mineral acids. It loses between 10 and 20% of its weight on drying at 200° for 4 hours.
The United States Pharmacopeia 31, 2008 (Magaldrate). A combination of aluminium and magnesium hydroxides and sulfates. It contains the equivalent of 90 to 105% of Al5Mg10(OH)31(SO4)2, calculated on the dried basis. A white odourless crystalline powder. Insoluble in water and in alcohol soluble in dilute solutions of mineral acids. It loses between 10 and 20% of its weight on drying at 200° for 4 hours.
