FAQ

Other medicines with anticholinergic effects can increase problems such as dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision and urinary retention. Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, including ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin and some HIV medicines, can raise tolterodine levels. Tell the prescriber or pharmacist about all medicines, including inhalers, eye drops and over-the-counter treatments.

Description

Detrol is the brand under which we supply oral tolterodine tablets for adults with an overactive bladder. We offer both available strengths, 1 mg and 2 mg, in packs of 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 270, and 360 tablets. The practical choice is therefore not only which strength has been prescribed, but also which pack size provides a suitable supply without encouraging you to over-order or risk running short.

Comparing Detrol 2 mg pack sizes and value

Because tolterodine is often taken for months rather than days, the price you pay per tablet can matter almost as much as the headline price of a pack. The comparison below sets out every pack size we currently offer at the 2 mg strength, together with the exact price, price per tablet, and relative saving available from larger packs.

Compare Detrol 2 mg Pack Sizes by Value

Treat those figures as a starting point rather than a target quantity to buy. A pack that lowers your unit price is only good value if it matches how long your prescriber expects you to continue treatment, how you store medicines at home, and the expiry date printed on the pack we dispatch to you. The same seven quantities are available for our 1 mg tablets, although the comparison above is specifically for the 2 mg strength.

  • How many weeks or months your current prescription is meant to cover
  • Whether you have a cool, dry place to store tablets away from excess moisture
  • The expiry date on the pack, since a very large pack bought for a short trial could outlast its shelf life before you finish it
  • Whether your prescriber might adjust your dose soon, which could leave part-used packs of one strength

Quantity also affects how often you need to reorder. A smaller pack may suit an initial treatment trial or an anticipated review, while a larger pack may be more convenient once the dose is stable and continued treatment has been agreed. Do not use a larger quantity as a reason to extend treatment beyond the period recommended for you, and do not change between 1 mg and 2 mg tablets simply to use up a pack.

How do you decide between the 1 mg and 2 mg tablet?

Tolterodine treatment usually starts at 2 mg taken twice a day, which is the standard adult dose for overactive bladder symptoms such as urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence. The dose may be reduced to 1 mg twice a day when the standard dose causes troublesome adverse effects. A 1 mg twice-daily regimen is also used for people with impaired liver function or severe renal impairment. That decision is specific to your health, response, and current medicines, so the choice between our 1 mg and 2 mg packs should follow your prescriber's directions rather than price alone.

StrengthTypical adult useWhen it is usually chosen
1 mg tabletTwice-daily dosing at a lower total daily doseImpaired liver function, severe renal impairment, or adverse effects on the 2 mg dose
2 mg tabletTwice-daily dosing at the standard starting doseMany adults beginning treatment for overactive bladder

Pack size works alongside strength rather than instead of it. Once your prescriber has set your dose, the remaining question is how many tablets it is appropriate to keep on hand at once. Tolterodine treatment should also be reviewed periodically; UK product information advises reassessing the effect after two to three months, even when longer treatment is expected.

  • Whether this is a first prescription being trialled or a confirmed, ongoing regimen
  • When your response and dose are next due to be reviewed
  • How often you are happy to reorder and go through checkout again
  • Any planned travel or changes to routine that could interrupt access to your medicine
  • The storage and expiry points covered above

Detrol as a brand, tolterodine as the active ingredient

Detrol is a brand name; tolterodine is the active ingredient in the tablets we supply under that name. Other antimuscarinic medicines used for overactive bladder, including oxybutynin, solifenacin, darifenacin, fesoterodine, and trospium, work in a broadly similar way by blocking muscarinic receptors, although their dosing, side-effect profiles, and suitability can differ. Mirabegron and vibegron use a different mechanism by activating beta-3 receptors, which helps the bladder relax while it fills.

None of these alternatives forms part of our current Detrol listing. They are not direct pack-for-pack substitutes, and switching should be discussed with a prescriber rather than based on price alone. A different medicine may be considered when tolterodine does not control symptoms sufficiently, causes unacceptable antimuscarinic effects, or is unsuitable because of another condition or interaction. If you are comparing treatments for bladder-related conditions more broadly, you can also browse our Urinary Tract section.

What Detrol tablets are used for

Detrol tablets are indicated for adults with symptoms of overactive bladder syndrome, where the bladder muscle contracts more often or more forcefully than intended. This can appear as a sudden compelling need to urinate, increased daytime or night-time frequency, and urge incontinence. Treatment aims to reduce these symptoms and improve bladder control rather than cure every possible underlying cause of urinary symptoms.

New or changing urinary symptoms still need appropriate assessment. Pain when urinating, blood in the urine, fever, difficulty emptying the bladder, or a sudden unexplained change in bladder habits may point to a problem that tolterodine is not intended to treat. Some people use the medicine alongside practical measures such as adjusting the timing of drinks, moderating caffeine, bladder training, or pelvic-floor support when these have been recommended for them.

How tolterodine works and how to take Detrol tablets

Tolterodine blocks muscarinic receptors involved in bladder contraction. This reduces involuntary detrusor muscle activity and can increase the volume the bladder holds before urgency occurs. The tablets are generally taken with a glass of water, with or without food, at roughly the same times each day. Follow the directions given for your own regimen and do not take extra tablets to obtain a faster effect.

Some easing of urgency and frequency may be noticed within the first couple of weeks, although the fuller effect on incontinence episodes can take several weeks of consistent use to become clear. If a dose is missed, the usual approach is to skip it when the next dose is near and take the next dose at its normal time rather than doubling up. Your prescriber's or pharmacist's instructions should take priority over general guidance.

Common antimuscarinic adverse effects include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes or blurred vision
  • Constipation or indigestion
  • Headache
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, or fatigue

Dry mouth may be helped by regular sips of water or sugar-free gum if suitable, while persistent constipation should not be ignored. Seek prompt medical advice if you become unable to pass urine, develop severe abdominal swelling or constipation, experience a marked change in heartbeat, or have signs of a serious allergic reaction. Blurred vision, dizziness, and fatigue can affect driving and the safe use of machinery, so first establish how the tablets affect you.

Who should take extra care with Detrol tablets, or avoid them?

Tolterodine is not suitable for everyone. It is contraindicated in people with known hypersensitivity to tolterodine or a tablet ingredient, urinary retention, uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, severe ulcerative colitis, or toxic megacolon. Extra caution is needed with bladder outflow obstruction, obstructive gastrointestinal conditions, reduced gastrointestinal movement, hiatus hernia, autonomic neuropathy, and impaired liver or kidney function.

Potent CYP3A4 inhibitors can increase exposure to tolterodine. These include certain azole antifungals, macrolide antibiotics, and medicines used for HIV treatment, and some combinations may need to be avoided rather than managed by changing the tablet strength without advice. Other medicines with antimuscarinic effects can increase dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and urinary retention. Tolterodine may also oppose the effects of medicines that increase gastrointestinal movement.

A prescriber should review the treatment carefully in people with risk factors for QT-interval prolongation, including certain heart conditions, low potassium or magnesium levels, a slow heart rate, or concurrent use of medicines known to affect cardiac rhythm. Tell the relevant healthcare professional about prescription medicines, non-prescription products, and supplements before starting or changing tolterodine.

The UK product information does not recommend tolterodine during pregnancy. It should also be avoided during breastfeeding because it is not known whether it passes into human milk. Its efficacy has not been demonstrated in children, so it is not recommended for paediatric use.

  • Known hypersensitivity to tolterodine or any tablet ingredient
  • Urinary retention or a significant bladder outflow obstruction
  • Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Severe ulcerative colitis, toxic megacolon, or another significant obstructive bowel condition
  • Myasthenia gravis

Do you need to send us a prescription to order Detrol tablets?

Tolterodine tablets are classified as a prescription-only medicine in the United Kingdom, and that regulatory classification is separate from our ordering policy. We do not require you to upload or post a prescription before we accept an order for Detrol tablets, so you can place an order without that extra step at checkout. This describes how we handle orders; it does not change the medicine's UK prescription status or replace appropriate medical advice about whether tolterodine and a particular dose are suitable for you.

Tolterodine as an active ingredient is authorised for human medicinal use in the UK. Strength, quantity, and pack selection remain separate practical decisions, and our checkout policy should not be interpreted as guidance to start, stop, or alter prescription treatment without consulting an appropriate healthcare professional.

Ordering, support, and delivery when you choose Detrol from us

We have been running our catalogue since 2018, and our support team is available 24 hours a day by email and online chat, with a pharmacist on hand to answer questions about your order. Once you have chosen the strength and pack size, our checkout confirms exactly what you are buying before we pack and dispatch it, so you can check the selected option and delivery details before completing the order.

When your order arrives, check that the product name, strength, quantity, packaging, and expiry date match what you ordered before taking a tablet. Contact our support team if the parcel is damaged, the contents differ from your order, or any label information is unclear. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Store Detrol tablets at 20°C to 25°C in their original, tightly closed container and protect them from excessive moisture. Do not transfer a large supply into an unlabelled container, and do not use tablets after the printed expiry date. These storage points apply whichever strength or pack size you choose.

Choosing the right Detrol option for you

In practice, the decision comes down to three layers: the strength set by your prescriber, the quantity that realistically matches the expected duration of treatment and your preferred reorder frequency, and the pack size that provides appropriate value for that quantity. The comparison near the beginning of this guide makes the available 2 mg options easier to assess, while both strengths can be ordered in quantities from 30 to 360 tablets.

Weigh unit value against upcoming dose reviews, tolerability, storage conditions, and expiry dates rather than choosing the largest pack by default. A lower price per tablet does not create value if the strength later changes or tablets expire before use. If you are unsure which option on this page matches the directions you have been given, contact our support team before completing checkout; questions about changing the dose or treatment itself should be directed to your prescriber or another appropriate healthcare professional.
