FAQ

Yes. Tell the surgeon, dentist or anaesthetist that you use dapoxetine, including occasional use, as it can interact with medicines used around a procedure and may cause dizziness or fainting. Do not stop it for a set period unless the clinician responsible for the procedure advises this.

Description

Dapoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to help adult men with premature ejaculation delay ejaculation and improve control. We supply it as oral tablets in three strengths, 30 mg, 60 mg and 90 mg, so the strength specified for an individual can be matched to a convenient pack size. Because dapoxetine is taken only when needed, ahead of anticipated sexual activity, understanding how quickly it acts, how it clears the body and where its safety limits lie makes a real difference to how it is used. This article covers the pharmacology, evidence, practical dosing principles and how UK prescription rules relate to the way we process orders.

What Dapoxetine Tablets Are

The active ingredient in every tablet we list is dapoxetine, formulated as an oral tablet taken by mouth. Dapoxetine was initially investigated as an antidepressant, but its rapid absorption and relatively quick initial elimination made it better suited to on-demand treatment of premature ejaculation than to maintaining the continuous exposure usually required for depression. It belongs to the same broad pharmacological class as fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline, sharing the mechanism of serotonin reuptake inhibition, but its behaviour in the body is different. Priligy is the best-known dapoxetine brand and is authorised in the UK as 30 mg and 60 mg film-coated tablets. Our offered range contains dapoxetine in oral tablet form, but branding, formulation details, available strengths and packaging may differ.

Premature Ejaculation and Why It Is Treated

Premature ejaculation is defined by more than a stopwatch measurement. Lifelong premature ejaculation commonly involves ejaculation within about one minute of vaginal penetration, while acquired premature ejaculation involves a clinically significant reduction in latency, often to about three minutes or less. In both cases, reduced control and personal or relationship distress are important parts of the diagnosis. It is one of the most common male sexual health concerns and is frequently under-reported because of embarrassment rather than rarity. The condition does not have a single cause; central serotonergic signalling, anxiety, sensitivity, relationship factors and learned response patterns can all play a part. This helps explain why a medicine that modifies serotonin activity can have a role distinct from the use of SSRIs for mood disorders.

How Dapoxetine Works

Like other SSRIs, dapoxetine blocks the serotonin transporter, increasing serotonin signalling at nerve synapses. Serotonin helps regulate the spinal and brain pathways involved in ejaculation, and greater serotonergic activity can inhibit the ejaculatory reflex and improve perceived control. Dapoxetine is absorbed rapidly and reaches its peak plasma concentration within roughly one to two hours. Its clinical timing is therefore based on taking it about one to three hours before anticipated sexual activity rather than every day.

Evidence for Effectiveness

Dapoxetine has been studied in large randomised, placebo-controlled trials involving several thousand men across multiple countries, including phase III programmes supporting European authorisations. Trials of 30 mg and 60 mg taken on demand found increases in intravaginal ejaculatory latency time from baseline, with greater average improvement than placebo, as well as improvements in reported control and reductions in distress. Depending on the study population and analysis, average latency commonly increased by roughly two to three times from baseline, but placebo groups also improved and individual results varied. The 60 mg dose generally produced a somewhat larger average effect than 30 mg while also causing more adverse effects. Benefit can occur with the first dose rather than requiring the several-week build-up associated with daily antidepressant treatment.

Formulation and Ingredients

Each offered tablet contains dapoxetine at a labelled strength of 30 mg, 60 mg or 90 mg. The supplied product identity does not establish a complete list of inactive ingredients, so anyone with a known allergy should check the packaging or accompanying leaflet for the ingredients of the specific tablets received. Inactive ingredients influence matters such as tablet stability, appearance and handling but do not provide dapoxetine's therapeutic action. Dapoxetine's ATC classification code, G04BX14, reflects its place among urological medicines rather than conventional antidepressant therapies.

Licensed and Practical Uses

Dapoxetine is used specifically for premature ejaculation in adult men, generally those aged 18 to 64 years. This age boundary matters clinically: safety and effectiveness have not been established in men aged 65 and over, and the medicine should not be used by anyone under 18. In the UK, dapoxetine is not authorised to treat depression or anxiety even though it shares a drug class with medicines used for those conditions. Its short exposure profile and on-demand regimen are not suitable substitutes for the sustained treatment required for a mood disorder.

Strengths, Pack Sizes and General Dosing Principles

We offer dapoxetine tablets in 30 mg, 60 mg and 90 mg strengths, with pack sizes ranging from 10 to 360 pills. The established UK regimen starts with 30 mg taken as a single dose approximately one to three hours before anticipated sexual activity, no more frequently than once every 24 hours. If the response to 30 mg is insufficient and it has been tolerated without moderate or severe adverse effects or symptoms suggesting impending fainting, a prescriber may consider increasing the dose to 60 mg. The maximum recommended UK dose is 60 mg. The 90 mg strength in our range exceeds that established maximum and should not be treated as a routine starting, escalation or single-dose option.

The tablet should be swallowed whole with at least one full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. A high-fat meal can modestly delay absorption and reduce the peak concentration, but this is not generally considered clinically significant. Dapoxetine is not intended for continuous daily use, and treatment should be reviewed after the first four weeks or six doses and then periodically to confirm that the balance of benefit and adverse effects remains acceptable.

Elimination and Half-Life

Dapoxetine is absorbed and distributed quickly. Its initial plasma half-life is approximately one and a half hours, while the terminal half-life is around 19 hours. It is metabolised mainly through CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 pathways, as well as flavin monooxygenase and glucuronidation, producing metabolites that include active desmethyldapoxetine before clearance principally in the urine as metabolites. The rapid initial decline in concentration supports on-demand rather than daily use. Clinical studies did not identify the typical withdrawal syndrome associated with abruptly stopping some longer-term SSRIs, but that does not justify exceeding the once-per-24-hours limit or using dapoxetine as a daily antidepressant.

Important Safety Information

One of the most important early risks with dapoxetine is syncope, meaning a brief loss of consciousness or fainting. It may be preceded by dizziness, light-headedness, nausea, sweating, palpitations or weakness and can be associated with a vasovagal response or a fall in blood pressure on standing. Events have occurred most often within the first three hours after a dose, particularly after the first dose. If warning symptoms appear, the person should immediately lie down with the head lower than the body or sit with the head between the knees until the symptoms pass and should avoid standing suddenly.

Dizziness, blurred vision, reduced attention and drowsiness can also occur. Alcohol can increase neurocardiogenic effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, slow reactions and fainting, so it should be avoided when dapoxetine is taken. Anyone affected should not drive, cycle or operate hazardous machinery until fully recovered. Adequate hydration is important, and dapoxetine should not be taken when dehydrated because of illness, heavy sweating or inadequate fluid intake.

Prescription Status and Ordering Through Us

Dapoxetine is classified as a prescription-only medicine in the United Kingdom, and suspected side effects can be reported to the MHRA through the Yellow Card Scheme. The UK-authorised dapoxetine presentations sold under the brand Priligy cover 30 mg and 60 mg film-coated tablets; this does not establish UK authorisation for the 90 mg tablet or for the exact product offered here. Anyone considering dapoxetine should discuss whether it is suitable with a prescriber, particularly because medical and medicine-interaction screening is important before use.

Separately from that regulatory classification, our ordering process does not require you to upload a prescription before we accept an order. Our pharmacist-supported team is available 24/7 by email and online chat to answer questions about our products, ordering and delivery. This distinction matters: dapoxetine remains a prescription-only medicine under UK regulation, while our ordering policy describes the documents our checkout requires.

Who Should Not Take Dapoxetine

Dapoxetine must not be used by anyone with a known hypersensitivity to dapoxetine or any ingredient in the specific tablet. It is contraindicated in people with significant pathological heart conditions, including heart failure, clinically important ischaemic or valvular disease and conduction abnormalities such as second- or third-degree atrioventricular block or sick sinus syndrome unless treated with an appropriate pacemaker. A history of syncope is also a contraindication.

It must not be used in moderate or severe hepatic impairment. Caution is required in mild hepatic impairment and mild or moderate renal impairment, while use is not recommended in severe renal impairment. Dapoxetine should not be used in people with a history of mania, hypomania or severe depression, and treatment should be stopped if symptoms of these conditions develop. It is indicated for adult men aged 18 to 64 and should not be used in children, adolescents, women or men aged 65 and over because safety and effectiveness have not been established for those groups.

Interactions With Other Medicines and Alcohol

Dapoxetine must not be combined with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). At least 14 days should pass after stopping an MAOI before dapoxetine is started, and an MAOI should not be started until at least seven days after dapoxetine has been stopped. Similar restrictions apply to thioridazine and to other medicines or herbal products with serotonergic effects, including SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, tramadol, triptans, linezolid, lithium and St John's wort. Combining serotonergic treatments can cause serotonin syndrome, with symptoms such as agitation, confusion, sweating, fever, tremor, muscle rigidity, diarrhoea and a rapid heart rate.

Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, including ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, saquinavir, telithromycin, nefazodone and atazanavir, can substantially increase dapoxetine exposure and are contraindicated. With moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors, the dose is generally restricted to 30 mg and particular caution is needed in people known to metabolise medicines poorly through CYP2D6. Strong CYP2D6 inhibitors can also increase exposure, especially to the 60 mg dose, and require medical review.

Dapoxetine can interact with medicines that affect blood pressure or increase bleeding risk. UK product information advises against use with PDE5 inhibitors such as sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil because the combination may reduce orthostatic tolerance, and the safety and effectiveness of combined treatment have not been established. Warfarin, antiplatelet medicines and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may increase bleeding concerns. Alcohol should be avoided because it can intensify dizziness, impaired judgement and fainting risk.

Side Effects and When to Act

The most frequently reported effects include nausea, headache, dizziness and diarrhoea. These are often temporary, but persistent or troublesome symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional. More serious warning signs include fainting or near-fainting, a fast or irregular heartbeat, marked changes in mood or thinking and signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling or difficulty breathing. The comparison below separates expected reactions from warning signs and gives a practical response to each.

Dapoxetine Side Effects & Warning Signs

If a serious reaction occurs, stop taking the medicine and seek prompt medical attention. Call 999 for loss of consciousness that does not resolve promptly, difficulty breathing, severe swelling, a seizure or other immediately life-threatening symptoms. Mild effects may settle as the medicine clears, but the person should rest, maintain hydration and avoid driving or other hazardous activities until fully recovered.

Overdose and Accidental Ingestion

Taking more than the recommended single dose or taking another dose within 24 hours increases the likelihood and severity of adverse effects, including nausea, vomiting, agitation, tremor, dizziness, drowsiness, fainting and a fast heartbeat. There is no specific antidote for dapoxetine overdose. Medical management is supportive and may include monitoring blood pressure, heart rhythm and consciousness. Anyone who has taken more than the recommended amount, or who thinks a child or another person has swallowed the tablets, should contact NHS 111 promptly for advice. Call 999 if the person has collapsed, has a seizure, has difficulty breathing or cannot be awakened.

Storage Advice

Store dapoxetine tablets at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C, in the original package and away from moisture and heat. Keep them out of the sight and reach of children. Leaving tablets in their blister strip until they are needed helps protect them from humidity and damage. Do not use tablets after their expiry date, and ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unwanted or expired medicine safely.

Benefits and Practical Trade-offs

The clearest practical benefit of dapoxetine is its on-demand regimen: there is no daily dosing routine or several-week build-up period, which distinguishes it from longer-acting SSRIs sometimes prescribed off-label for premature ejaculation. Its limitations are equally important. It improves ejaculatory control rather than erectile function, so it will not directly treat difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. Nausea, dizziness, orthostatic symptoms and fainting can also limit use, while the need to plan a dose one to three hours before sex may feel restrictive.

Men who experience both premature ejaculation and erectile difficulties may find it useful to view our Erectile Dysfunction range alongside dapoxetine. The two concerns can occur together but require separate assessment, and medicines for erectile dysfunction should not be combined with dapoxetine without specific professional advice because of the potential effect on blood pressure and orthostatic tolerance.

Dapoxetine, Priligy and Other Alternatives

Priligy contains dapoxetine and is the UK-authorised brand available as 30 mg and 60 mg film-coated tablets. Other dapoxetine tablets share the same active ingredient when supplied at an equivalent labelled strength, but therapeutic interchangeability should not be assumed solely from the ingredient name; formulation, quality standards, authorisation and product instructions also matter. The leaflet and packaging supplied with the exact tablets should therefore be checked before use.

A non-oral alternative is a topical lidocaine-and-prilocaine spray, which reduces penile sensitivity locally rather than acting on serotonin throughout the body. This may suit some men who prefer to avoid a systemic SSRI, although local numbness, transfer to a partner and application timing are practical considerations. Behavioural approaches, psychosexual counselling and pelvic-floor strategies may also help, particularly where anxiety, relationship factors or learned response patterns contribute.

Some prescribers use longer-acting SSRIs such as paroxetine, sertraline or fluoxetine, or the tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine, off-label for premature ejaculation. These medicines are primarily licensed for depression or related disorders and are often taken daily, with a slower onset and a greater need to consider discontinuation effects and long-term adverse reactions. Tramadol is not a preferred routine alternative because of dependence, sedation, seizure and serotonin-syndrome risks. Choosing among dapoxetine, topical treatment, behavioural support and an off-label daily medicine requires an individual assessment of other health conditions, current medicines, desired timing and tolerance of adverse effects.
