Stromectol: the invention, uses, and dosages

Last updated on: January 17, 2023

Stromectol (Ivermectin) was invented as a remedy for diseases caused by parasites. Stromectol is used to treat the adverse effects caused by parasites that have penetrated animals or humans.

This drug helps to treat:

  • head lice;
  • scabies;
  • strongyloidiasis;
  • trichuriasis;
  • ascariasis;
  • lymphatic filariasis.

Ivermectin was discovered by scientists Satoshi Ōmura and William Campbell in 1975. However, the drug began to be actively used in medicine in 1981. Medication saved people from the so-called River Blindness disease, prevalent in most African countries.

Ivermectin Present Absent

This disease was caused by parasitic worms, and in many cases, it led to complete blindness. Unfortunately, at that time, doctors could not cure River Blindness. But when Stromectol was invented, treatment of the disease became possible.

Drug usage helped to fight River Blindness and save millions of people. Its peculiarity was in provoking the death of the parasite in the human body, with minimal impact on human health. Moreover, the drug did not cause inflammation and caused minimum side effects.

Due to its effectiveness and safety, Ivermectin is actively used in medicine nowadays as a drug that treats diseases caused by various parasites.

NDC is 55695-019 (0006-0032).

However, a combination of some drugs can harm a person’s health. That is why, before taking two different types of drugs, you need to ask whether it is safe. Ivermectin can be used with barbiturates (phenobarbital, butalbital) , benzodiazepines (clonazepam, lorazepam), sodium oxybate, and valproic acid.

Possible Side Effects of Stromectol

Like any other medicine, Ivermectin can cause side effects.

Side effects occur individually, each person has different side effects, and some do not feel them at all.

Side effects are divided into safe and dangerous. You need to see a doctor immediately if you feel any dangerous side effects. For example, if you feel irritation, pain, and redness of the eyes or eyelid, it is a sign that you need to seek professional help urgently.

However, there are minor side effects that are not dangerous to humans. During treatment for onchocerciasis, the patient may notice the following side effects:

  • fever;
  • skin irritation;
  • muscle and joint pain;
  • palpitations.

Rare side effects are the following:

  • headaches;
  • increased sweating.

In rare cases, the patient may feel dizzy after getting up from a sitting or lying position. If you are treated for Strongyloidiasis, you may feel the following:

  • loss of appetite;
  • shaking or trembling;
  • drowsiness.

If you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, you should contact your doctor immediately:

  • rash;
  • irritation;
  • itching;
  • shortness of breath.

Precautions

Although Ivermectin is safe for both children and adults, scientists have not yet proven if it is safe for pregnant women or not. After all, during breastfeeding, drugs are excreted in milk. Therefore, it is not advisable to use it during breastfeeding.

How Long Does Stromectol Stay in Your System?

After intake, GABA is released, which leads to paralysis of the worms. Parasites lose the ability to feed and attach to the intestinal wall, resulting in death. The parasitic infection comes out together with fecal masses. When the drug enters the body, the main component is absorbed into the blood and spreads throughout the digestive system. The drug is evenly distributed throughout the body and even gets on the mucous membranes of the eyes.

Medication is completely removed from the body in twenty-eight hours.

During treatment, your doctor will check the progress of the disease. If you are treated for River Blindness, you must see an ophthalmologist after completing the treatment. Your doctor may assign stool analysis within three months after treatment.

Storage

It should be stored in a dry place; the temperature should not exceed 30° C. Overheating the drug may cause it to lose its properties. Therefore, it should be stored in a box, away from heat and moisture (bathroom). Also, keep away from children and animals.
