Feldene: What Is It?

NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, include the medication Feldene. It helps ease discomfort and lower swelling that affects joints.

Feldene helps to relieve pain, stiffness, and swelling associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, a condition in which the spine becomes rheumatized. It will benefit you as long as you take it, but it won’t cure your arthritis.

Feldene will only be prescribed by your doctor if other NSAIDs have failed to provide you with adequate symptom relief.

Before Using Feldene

Never Take Feldene in the Following Cases

• If you suffer from bleeding, perforations, or stomach or intestinal ulcers now or in the past.
• If you now have or have ever had gastrointestinal malignancies, diverticulitis (infected or inflamed pouches/pockets in the colon), ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease, you may be at risk for these conditions.
• If you use other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, celecoxib, or acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), a component of many medications used to reduce fever and alleviate pain.
• If you use anticoagulants to stop blood clots, like warfarin.
• The active ingredient in this medication, piroxicam, as well as any of the other ingredients, other NSAIDs, or medications, causes severe skin reactions (of any severity), such as exfoliative dermatitis (intense reddening of the skin with peeling off in layers or scales), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (symptoms include blistering or peeling of the mouth, eyes, or genitalia), or toxic epidermal necrolysis (a disease with blistering and peeling of the top layer of skin).
• If you suffer from acute heart failure.
• If your pregnancy is in its final three months.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of the situations above apply to you, and avoid using Feldene.

Use Feldene with Extra Care 

Before taking Feldene (piroxicam), your physician will weigh the potential advantages of this medication against the possibility of experiencing adverse effects. During your Feldene treatment, your doctor will determine how frequently you need to be examined and may need to perform examinations. 

There may be a slight increase in the risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction) or stroke when using medications like Feldene. Any risk is increased if you smoke or take this medication in large doses for an extended period. Don’t go above the suggested dosage or course of therapy. 

Inform your physician before using Feldene if you now have or have ever had any of the following conditions: 

• hepatic illness;
• renal illness;
• hypertension, cardiac issues, or stroke;
• elevated cholesterol or artery stiffening;
• asthma;
• diabetes.

Inform your doctor before using Feldene if you have any allergies or other health issues or are not sure if you should take this medication.  

If you experience any allergic reaction, including a skin rash, facial swelling, wheezing, or trouble breathing, you should cease taking Feldene immediately and contact your doctor. 

Zeldene, like all NSAIDs, should be used with extreme caution as it can result in serious side effects in the stomach and intestines, including discomfort, bleeding, ulceration, and perforation. 

If you experience stomach pain or any indication of bleeding in the stomach or intestines, such as dark or bloody bowel motions or blood in the vomit, you should cease taking Feldene right away and contact your doctor.

If you are over 70 years old or taking other medications, such as corticosteroids (drugs used to treat a variety of conditions like allergies and hormone imbalances), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), or low-dose aspirin to prevent heart attacks or strokes, your doctor may prescribe Feldene in addition to another medication to protect your stomach and intestines from side effects. 

It might be more challenging to get pregnant if you take Feldene. If you have trouble getting pregnant or are planning a pregnancy, you should let your doctor know. 

It is recommended to take feldene with or after food.

Patients 70 Years or Older

If you are older than 70, your doctor should shorten the course of your Feldene therapy and schedule more frequent visits with you. 

If you are above 80 years old, do not take this medication.

Taking Other Drugs 

Inform your physician about all additional medications you have taken in the past week, including over-the-counter ones. Sometimes, medications conflict. Your doctor may restrict Feldene or other medication usage, or you may need to take an alternative medication.

Feldene should not be taken with the following medications:

• for the treatment of pain, aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications;
• anticoagulants to stop blood clots, including warfarin.

If you take any of the following medications, let your doctor know before using Feldene:

• corticosteroids, medications used to treat a range of ailments, including allergies and hormone abnormalities;
• 75 mg of low-dose aspirin to prevent stroke or heart attack;
• some drugs, such as digoxin, that are classified as cardiac glycosides and are used to treat heart diseases;
• certain depression medications, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or lithium;
• antihypertensives for the management of hypertension;
• methotrexate, which is used to treat several illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and malignancies;
• tacrolimus or ciclosporin, which are medications used to lessen the risk of organ rejection after transplantation;
• antibiotics classified as quinolones, including ciprofloxacin, which are used to treat a variety of infections;
• mifepristone, a medication used for contraception;
• diuretics, like hydrochlorothiazide, to treat renal issues or high blood pressure.

Being Pregnant and Nursing

Before taking Feldene, let your doctor know if you are nursing a baby, intend to get pregnant, or are already pregnant. Do not use Feldene if you are within three months of finishing your pregnancy. Although it is generally not advised at other stages of pregnancy, you might be able to take it if your doctor says it is essential for you.

Before taking any medication, get advice from your pharmacist or doctor.

Driving and Using Equipment

Some users of these pills may experience fatigue, drowsiness, vertigo, or visual issues. Do not use machinery or drive if you are impacted.

Feldene (Piroxicam) Administration

If you are older than 70, your doctor might prescribe a lower daily dose and shorten the course of treatment. 

Always consult your physician if you believe the medication is not working.

If you inadvertently consume excessive Feldene, contact your physician immediately or head to the closest emergency room. Whether Feldene is still in the packaging or not, you should always carry the properly labeled medication with you.

If it’s time for your next dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Never take two doses to make up for something you forgot to take.

Potential Negative Effects 

Like many medications, Feldene might have adverse effects, but not everyone experiences them. 

If you suffer any of the following symptoms after using Feldene, notify your doctor right away and cease using the medication: 

• any sign of bleeding in the intestines or stomach, including bloody or black stools or vomiting;
• abrupt dyspnea, dyspnea, fever, edema of the lips, eyes, or face, rash, or itching (particularly involving the entire body);
• a skin, mouth, eye, or genital rash, blistering, or peeling;
• jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and eye whites, is a symptom of liver disease such as hepatitis.

Frequent Feldene Side Effects

• Bloating, constipation, or diarrhea;
• experiencing nausea, vomiting, or appetite loss;
• painful lips or mouth;
• dyspepsia, discomfort or pain in the abdomen;
• stomach ulcers (peptic).

Other Side Effects

• Effects on circulation and heart: elevated blood pressure, pounding or rapid heartbeat, and swollen ankles and/or feet (edema). When using medications like Feldene, there may be a slight increase in the risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction) or stroke.
• Dizziness, vertigo (a spinning sensation), headaches, insomnia patterns, melancholy, anxiety, hallucinations, mood swings, mental disorientation, and pins and needles are among the symptoms that might affect your neurological system.
• Some effects on the skin are rashes, itching, redness, soreness, thickening or scaling, splitting or loosening of fingernails, hair loss, and heightened skin sensitivity to sunlight.
• The effects on your kidneys include renal damage, kidney failure, or inflammation. If you detect any changes in the appearance or output of your urine, potentially together with back or abdominal pain or kidney pain, get in touch with your doctor.
• Abnormalities in blood and other biochemical tests impact medical and blood testing. These impacts can lead to unusual bleeding or bruises, an elevated risk of infection, and blood sugar variations.
• Effects on the eyes and ears include irritated eyes, swollen eyes, hearing loss, and ringing in the ears. 
• Additional side effects include fever, bleeding from the nose, changes in weight, inflammation of the pancreas (which can cause excruciating pain in the upper abdomen or back), feeling ill, and unexpected weakness or exhaustion in the absence of other symptoms.

How to Keep Feldene

Keep any medications out of children’s sight and reach. 

Keep at or below 30°C. 

Feldene’s expiration date is stamped on the bottle label and carton; do not use it after that date. The last day of the month is also referred to as the expiration date. 

It is not appropriate to dispose of medications with household or wastewater garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to get rid of medications that aren’t needed anymore. These actions will better protect the environment.

What’s in Feldene 

Piroxicam is the active ingredient in Feldene capsules. There are two dosage forms for Feldene: 10 mg and 20 mg. 

The remaining constituents include sodium lauryl sulfate, maize starch, lactose, and vegetable magnesium stearate. Gelatin, indigotin (E132), red iron oxide (E172), and titanium dioxide (E171) are present in the 10 mg capsule shells. Gelatin and titanium dioxide are present in the 20 mg capsule (El 71). 

The Appearance of the Capsules and Contents of the Pack

Red and blue capsules contain 10 milligrams of Feldene. The 20 mg pills of Feldene are white. 

There are packs containing 10, 20, and 30 mg capsules, respectively.
